Designing a Seamless Subscription Experience
Designed the subscription experience for Englebook an English speaking learning app with a focus on integrating premium features naturally into the product. The goal was to highlight the value of upgrading without disrupting the learning journey, creating a seamless experience that balanced business goals with a clean and intuitive interface.

Challenge
The product had an established community of more than 50,000 users who were accustomed to a free experience. The goal was to introduce a sustainable subscription model that highlighted premium benefits without interrupting the learning journey or locking essential features.
My Role
I worked on designing the subscription experience for the English learning app, focusing on user behavior and demographics to introduce Premium in a way that felt valuable rather than intrusive. I also collaborated closely with product and development teams throughout the design process.

Discovery & Insights
Understanding the Problem
Englebook had grown to over 50,000 users as a free English-speaking app. The challenge was to introduce a subscription model that encouraged upgrades without disrupting the existing learning experience. The goal was to clearly communicate the value of Premium while keeping the core features accessible. Since most users were based in Nigeria, pricing and the subscription strategy were also tailored to suit the local market.
Competitive analysis
I studied subscription experiences from leading language learning apps to understand how they introduced Premium features, communicated value, and encouraged upgrades without relying on aggressive paywalls. These insights helped shape a subscription experience that felt natural within Englebook's existing user journey.
Key Design Challenges
After mapping the customer journey and understanding how stores operated, a few key challenges became clear:
Value over restrictions: Encourage Premium upgrades without locking essential learning features.
Local pricing: Design a subscription experience around pricing suitable for the Nigerian market.
Natural upgrade points: Introduce subscription prompts at meaningful moments in the learning journey.
Consistent experience: Ensure the subscription flow blended seamlessly with the app's existing interface and interactions.
User Personas
To better understand the app's audience, I created user personas based on the primary user demographics and learning goals. These personas helped identify motivations, pain points, and subscription expectations, ensuring the Premium experience was designed around real user needs rather than assumptions.


Plans & Design
Building on the insights from research and user personas, I designed a three-tier subscription model consisting of Basic, Standard, and Premium plans. The experience was designed so that core learning features remained free, while paid plans offered additional value through exclusive content and enhanced learning tools. This approach positioned Premium as an upgrade rather than a restriction, encouraging users to subscribe without disrupting their existing learning journey.

Plan Details
Each subscription plan was designed to be self-explanatory, giving users a quick overview of its benefits at a glance. For those who wanted to compare features in detail, a Learn More option provided a complete breakdown of each plan, helping users make an informed decision before subscribing.

Subscription
Users could subscribe through the familiar Google Play purchase flow, ensuring a secure and seamless checkout experience. After subscribing, their active membership was displayed on the profile, providing quick access to their current plan and Premium benefits.

Conclusion
This project demonstrated how monetization can be introduced without compromising the user experience. By focusing on user needs, local pricing, and thoughtful upgrade opportunities, the subscription experience felt like a natural extension of the app rather than a barrier, helping create a sustainable business model while preserving the learning experience.
